Silver State 300 Race Report

The team departed at 7:30am on Friday April 16, 2010, from team headquarters in southwest Phoenix.  The team was ready and the cars were ready to rock. We arrived around 2pm in North Las Vegas at the Aliante Station Casino for registration, tech inspection, and to pickup some of that Sunoco race gas. After all business was in order the team drove 100 miles north towards Alamo, Nevada where the race starting line was. All the last minute check lists were performed on the cars and chase trucks, then Snack Pack (Ali) and Chris G. were going to do a pit challenge, but everyone decided it better to save our energy for race day. The team put together one of our famous pre-race dinners with a few beverages and finished all the verbal details of the race.

GaryJSS300Saturday morning everyone was up early for the start. The 1156 car started in the first slot, the 1123 in the third slot, the 1178 in the fourth slot, and the 2009 started in the first slot for the 2000 class. We had a 6 mile transfer section to the speed start up course to protect the "turtle". From the get go the 1156 car with Gary Jordan and Marley ran hard leading past race mile 125 and maintaining third place to pit 2 and the drivers change. The 1178 car with Gary Williams and Chris Godfrey was off the start like a rocket.  They overtook 1123 by race mile 35, and took the second place car shortly after pit 2, then took the lead. The 1123 car with Lee Sr. and Kyle was off a little slow with Lee complaining about his tire decision, the car being really tight in the front and loose in the rear, making it want to switch ends on every corner.  Despite all, Lee brought the car to pit 2 in fourth place. The 2009 was off strong with Rick and Alan leading the class to pit 2.  After the 2nd pit the 1178 continued to lead, the 1156 was running in third, and the 1123 was running in fourth. The 2009 was leading its class through a lot of dust, bad vision, and tight twisty racing. The 1178 continued to lead through pit 3 and into pit 4.  The drivers change with the Jones team about 2 minutes behind, and the battle was on.  The 1156 continued in 3rd place with no flats and charged strong all the way to the drivers change.  While in pit, the team discovered one of the thru pins on the front of the 1156 had come loose and needed to be tightened.  The 1123 arrived at the pit while service was being performed on the 1156.  The 1178 was gone and in the lead with Jones on their ass. The 1123 got out of the pit ahead of the 1156 car. Fresh drivers are now in all the cars.  The 1178 has Bryon Folks, the 1123 has Lee Jr. and Clayton, and the 1156 has Tom Shaw.  The 1178 is leading, the Jones are in second,  another car in the battle is in third,  the 1123 is in fourth,  and the 1156 has dropped to fifth due to the thru pin service in pit 4.  The 2009 has arrived in pit 4 and does a drive thru headed to pit 5 for its drivers change. News comes across the radio that the 1178 will need a spare at pit 5, and that the Jones car and the 1178 car are stuck in the silt around race mile 190.

The 1123 car gets past 1178 and Jones while they are stuck.  The 1156 is having engine problems with plugged idle jets; the 2009 is having troubles as well due to a lost power steering belt and engine power failure. The team is frantic to deal with all the issues. Alan installs another belt on the power steering, but still no power. Rick soon finds that the air filter has become plugged so the guys get it cleaned out and off they go, with an unfortunate drop to 3rd.   The 1123 is running strong and comes thru pit 5 in 2nd place and only 4 minutes out of 1st place. The 1178 makes it in 3rd place needing a tire in the rack and out they go.  The 1156 makes it in and the FAT crew of Ron and Tim get the jets cleaned out and they are back out in the 5th position. The 2009 car makes it to the pit in the 3rd position and has a driver change with Amy and Snack Pack getting in. In no time the car is off with a new air filter and gas.  All stays pretty close thru pit 6. The 1123 car is running in 2nd now, only about 3 minutes behind first. The 1178 car is running in 3rd, and the 1156 is running in 5th,  still not as strong as Tom would like. The 2009 is running strong with no problems and everyone is headed to the finish.  The chase team was on pins and needles because they have never had all 4 cars, this late in the race, in position to finish. The 1123 takes 1st about 20 miles from the finish while blowing a corner in the section that we were unable to pre-run, which resulted in no notes. They survived the corner with little worry.  The 2nd place car however blows the corner with the dust and recovers with 3 flats. The team is charging hard to the finish.  The 1123 is first with 2 minutes to spare, the 1178 comes in 3rd after yet another flat,  the 1156 comes in 5th just a little under power, and the 2009 comes in 3rd place. All 4 cars finish in the top 5! A great day for Banning Motorsports and a testament to all the hard work of everyone involved with the team and a huge effort by the (best) chase team in all of off road racing.  A special thanks to Andy, Ben, Chris, Chuck, Cooper, Scoop, Megan, Betsie, Jake, Gary Sr & Cheryl Williams, and Dick & Michelle Holliday for making all the pits run smooth and keeping our cars out front.

We will see you all soon in the desert, some place in the dust.
